Lea Salonga – High Quality Singing

Today, I’m not gonna cook however, I’m going to tell you a story about my most recent experience of having the privilege of watching a very very talented Filipino Singer perform at the Sydney Opera house. This is the most iconic venues in Sydney and let me tell you, she slayed it. Lea Salonga has a concert over the weekend and sang all the classic show tunes she’s known for.
I suppose for those of you who don’t know her, here’s a brief summary of who she is why she’s so looked up to by most Filipinos here and overseas. Her story started when she was cast as Kim in Miss Saigon. It was a great success in London and they brought the show to broadway. Then she won the Tonys, was  the singing voice for Jasmin and Mulan, and the rest is history. I didnt really want this to be a wiki of her. In short, she’s amazing and talented, and us filipinos have little things to be proud of, and when we can grasp at a small spark like this, well we hold on to it.

Now, I do admire her, but living overseas kind of gets you disconnected with what’s happening in the country. And since she’s not really known internationally, well, what I’m getting at is, it has been a while since I saw her perform live. I completely forgot the sensation, and how amazing her voice is. I think It was back when I was still in Highschool when I last saw her  live. And that was not even a concert, i think it was a play.

That brings us back to 2017, where me and my friends saw her perform with the Sydney Philharmonic Orchestra with in the Sydney Opera house. It was nothing short of EPIC. Really. It’s also cute that her brother is the musical director of the entire show. And given that the venue was a really big deal, she did sing some of her greatest performances such as On My Own and a nice little tune from Hamilton. They even made a One Direction song sound good.

It was no surprise that me and my friends were just utterly mesmerised by her.  And I would like to quote what one of my friends said, “It’s a dream come true, but it was a dream i didnt even have.” We laughed, but it did ring true. Going into the concert, I certainly did not expect to be overwhelmingly happy and enthralled by her vocal prowess. It’s angelic.

If you can catch her town, it’s totally worth it.

The Power of the Written Word

“A diary means yes indeed.” – Gertrude Stein

When I was a young girl, I kept a diary.

The diary was an ordinary silly pink thing that I bought from the only stationery shop in town. I would stay up late in my big, dank room in the basement, alone with my thoughts save for the stark electric light, my dresser, garden table and chair, and queen bed, careful to keep the bathroom door closed so as not to spook myself.

On this bed and way into the wee hours of the morning, I would alternately bury my head in a book or scribble some thoughts in the diary when the mood caught me.

I wrote the life goals that seemed important at the time — what I wanted to do with my life, my wishes, my heart’s desires.

Fast forward 10 years. Time passed, the diary forgotten until rediscovered one day.

It was an important day, a day when I learned an important life lesson that stayed with me forever. It took time, but yes, everything I wrote in that diary came to pass.

EVERYTHING I wrote in that notebook HAPPENED. It totally blew me, I was amazed, a classic Eureka! moment, it hit me like a slap in the face. That’s when I realized that words have power, and I, we, have the power to make things happen.
